How to play Imposter
Everyone gets the secret word. Except one. Here are the full rules — a round takes about five minutes.
The rules, step by step
1. Gather 3 to 12 players
Everyone needs their own phone. One player creates a room and shares the four-letter code; everyone else joins with that code.
2. Get your secret role
Each round the game picks a secret word from 520+ words across ten categories. Everyone sees the word — except the imposter, who only sees the category. Only you can see your own role.
3. Describe, don't reveal
Players take turns giving a one-line clue about the word. Be specific enough to prove you know it, vague enough that the imposter can't steal it.
4. Discuss before the timer ends
A shared countdown runs on every phone. Argue, accuse, defend — and watch who stays suspiciously quiet.
5. Vote
Everyone votes for the player they think is the imposter. The player with the most votes is revealed. A tie means nobody goes home.
6. The imposter's last chance
If the imposter is caught, they get one guess at the secret word. Guess right and they steal the round.
7. Score and play again
Points go to the crew for catching the imposter, and to the imposter for surviving or guessing the word. Play as many rounds as you like; the highest total wins.
Tips for winning
- Give a clue that is true but could apply to two or three things.
- As the imposter, speak in the middle of the round — never first, never last.
- Watch for clues that repeat what someone else already said.
- Custom word mode lets you load inside jokes for your group.
